Ingres Icebreaker: Integrated Database System
Enterprise architects, developers and database administrators may have become accustomed to unnecessarily bloated and complex software stacks, but with Ingres Icebreaker, you can now do something about it. Icebreaker eliminates unnecessary implementation and maintenance work and costs by melding the Linux operating system and the Ingres 2006 business open source enterprise-class database into an integrated database system. This integrated database platform provides customers and partners a robust platform to build solutions.
Icebreaker isn't merely about bolting together Linux and Ingres 2006. Through a joint engineering effort between rPath and Ingres, only those portions of the Linux operating system needed for the Ingres 2006 database are included in Icebreaker. The resulting benefits of the Icebreaker simplified stack include:
- One implementation instead of two
- One maintenance stream instead of two - throughout the solution lifecycle
- A smaller footprint
- Enhanced security
- Fewer QA cycles during application customization - throughout the application lifecycle
Is every application solution a candidate for an Icebreaker software infrastructure? Certainly there are scenarios where you still will want to use a full, general purpose operating system in conjunction with a database, particularly for legacy applications where application logic continues to run in the database. However, for the modern application based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) where database resources are viewed as services or objects, enterprises would be hard-pressed to not want to take advantage of Icebreaker.
